White House Drops 162 Pages on Smithsonian for Being Too Woke

The White House just published a 162-page report going after the Smithsonian Institution, and you have to wonder how many interns lost their summer to put that together. The report, as covered by Trending Views, accuses the museum system of promoting "extreme political activism" and pushing what it calls a radical interpretation of American history. One hundred and sixty-two pages. About a museum. That is longer than most novels people actually finish reading.

The main target here is the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, which the report claims has abandoned teaching a shared national story in favor of a divisive ideological framework. The White House says the museum's leadership let political activism seep into the curatorial direction, which is a fancy way of saying they did not like the exhibits.

Now here is the thing about the National Museum of American History. It is one of the most visited museums in the country. It has collections covering political, cultural, scientific, and military history. It has Archie Bunker's chair. It has Abraham Lincoln's top hat. If that place is running a radical agenda, they are hiding it behind some very convincing Americana.

The Smithsonian Institution has been around since 1846, operates more than a dozen museums mostly in Washington, and receives a substantial chunk of its funding from the federal government along with private donations. So the dynamic here is essentially the government telling a thing the government pays for that the government does not like what it is doing. Classic.

A Smithsonian spokesperson responded to the report but did not go through it claim by claim. Instead, they offered a statement saying the organization "remains committed to impartial learning and to providing educational experiences for all visitors." Which is the museum equivalent of "new phone, who dis."

Perhaps the most interesting detail buried in all of this is that the White House report did not actually detail what changes it wants the Smithsonian to make. So someone wrote 162 pages of complaints without a single concrete ask. That is like writing a very long Yelp review that says the food was terrible but refusing to say what you would have ordered instead.

Whether you think the Smithsonian is a bastion of balanced education or a secret propaganda machine disguised as a building full of old dresses and space capsules, you have to admire the energy it takes to produce a document this long about a museum. Most people just skip the gift shop and move on with their lives.
