President Donald Trump is gearing up for a primetime address Thursday night at 9 p.m. Eastern, and if the leaks are accurate, he is planning to drop some declassified intelligence alleging that China meddled in the 2020 presidential election to help Joe Biden. Nothing says "must see TV" quite like a president teasing "really big news" all week and then making the entire country wait for the reveal like it is a season finale of a reality show. Which, to be fair, is kind of his thing.
According to Trending Politics, the speech is expected to center on newly declassified intelligence, with CIA Director John Ratcliffe and Acting Director of National Intelligence Bill Pulte reportedly scheduled to participate. Pulte has been overseeing a review of documents slated for declassification, because apparently somebody finally remembered they had filing cabinets full of stuff nobody had looked at.
Investigative journalist Paul Sperry posted on X Wednesday evening that an administration source who reviewed a draft of the speech said Trump plans to unveil what Sperry described as "bombshell evidence" that China interfered in the 2020 election. According to Sperry, the alleged evidence is contained in four sets of recently declassified documents expected to be released Friday. He reported the documents were uncovered from previously suppressed FBI, CIA, and Office of the Director of National Intelligence records and detail what the source described as "alarming vulnerabilities" in America's election infrastructure.
Sperry also reported that the documents allegedly claim Chinese hackers accessed state voter registration databases and obtained information on tens of thousands of voters, which the source claimed could have been used to manufacture mail-in ballots. He additionally reported that Trump is expected to discuss the alleged existence of more than 100,000 non-citizens, including illegal immigrants, on voter rolls. Those claims have not yet been verified through public release of the documents, so keep your grain of salt handy.
CBS News reported Wednesday that the president is expected to allege Chinese meddling based on previously unreleased intelligence. Reuters reported the White House has been weighing whether to declassify intelligence concerning China's capability and intent to interfere in U.S. elections. The Washington Post previously reported the speech would focus on election infrastructure vulnerabilities and that Trump is also expected to discuss claims involving Venezuela.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has cautioned against relying on anonymous reports, saying "nobody knows yet what President Trump will ultimately say" and encouraging Americans to tune in. Which is honestly pretty solid marketing. Create mystery, let the leaks do the promotional work, then tell everyone the leaks might be wrong so they have to watch anyway. Somebody took notes during Apprentice production meetings.
The speech arrives as congressional Republicans continue pushing the SAVE Act and the administration ramps up its focus on election integrity ahead of the 2026 midterms. Whether the declassified documents live up to the hype or land with a thud remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Thursday night television just got a lot more interesting than whatever was scheduled on the streaming services.
