Sen. Slotkin Says SAVE Act Would Hurt Democrats, GOP Says Thanks

Michigan Democrat Senator Elissa Slotkin apparently missed the memo about not saying the quiet part out loud. As Trending Politics reported, Slotkin told Indiana's state Democratic Party that the SAVE America Act "would be hard for any Democrat in any state to win any election." Republicans, predictably, responded with the political equivalent of a chef's kiss.

The video, originally unearthed by Breitbart News, was recorded the day after the Senate narrowly rejected the Trump-backed bill in June by a 50-48 vote, with four Republicans crossing the aisle to join Democrats in voting no. Slotkin was celebrating the bill's defeat and calling Trump's push for it an attempt to "rig our democracy." But it was that one sentence about Democrats not being able to win that had conservatives doing cartwheels.

Here is what the SAVE America Act would actually do. It would require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections. It would require photo ID to cast a ballot. And it would direct states to take additional steps to remove noncitizens from voter rolls. Pretty standard stuff if you have ever applied for a library card or bought cold medicine at a pharmacy.

Slotkin did not elaborate on why, exactly, requiring people to prove they are citizens would be catastrophic for her party's electoral prospects. She did, however, argue that married women who changed their last names could face hurdles if their birth certificate name does not match their current ID.

Republicans were not having it. Rep. Tony Wied wrote on X, "Democrats are saying the quiet part out loud. They know they can't win on their own merit." Sen. Rand Paul called the married women argument "not only false, but it also paints women as incapable." And Sen. Mike Lee pointed out the obvious: "By that same logic, no married woman in America could fill out an I-9 form, which every American must do when starting a new job."

Trump himself has been hammering this issue for months. During his Feb. 24 State of the Union address, he said, "And the reason they don't want to do it, why would anybody not want voter ID? One reason: Because they want to cheat. There's only one reason." He even refused to sign a bipartisan housing bill in protest of Congress failing to pass the SAVE Act.

Slotkin's office referred Fox News Digital to a June video in which she claimed Trump said if Republicans lose the 2026 midterms, the election was rigged. Fox News Digital reviewed the State of the Union transcript and reported that Trump did not actually say that. So that is a swing and a miss on the quote check.

The White House piled on. Spokesperson Abigail Jackson said, "If securing America's elections, through commonsense methods like voter ID and proof of citizenship, will make it impossible for Democrats to win elections, perhaps they should reconsider the methods they're using to 'win.'"

Democrats and voting rights groups maintain that noncitizen voting is rare. The Center for Election Innovation and Research, which describes itself as nonpartisan, says officials act swiftly when cases are found. That may well be true. But when your own senator says voter ID would wipe out the party's chances nationwide, you might want to have a conversation about messaging before the next fundraiser speech.
