Nothing says "Happy Birthday, America" quite like teenagers firing automatic weapons into the ground while your family reunion potato salad gets cold. That is apparently what went down in North Charleston, South Carolina on the Fourth of July, and it went about as well as you would expect.
As The American Tribune reported, neighbors in the area were doing normal holiday things like grilling and spending time with family when a group of armed teenagers decided to add some unauthorized pyrotechnics to the evening. Multiple residents called police, but officers did not show up for over 45 minutes. When you are watching kids blast rounds into the dirt outside your front door, 45 minutes probably feels like a fiscal quarter.
The 911 audio, which Fox News broadcast, paints a lovely picture. "I called 45 minutes ago asked to have officers come out here to break up a group of kids with firearms and now there's an all-out war going on outside my front door," one caller said. Another reported "fully automatic weapons" and begged for help. When a dispatcher asked one caller if anyone was in danger, the response was simple and chilling: "Everyone is in danger."
When police finally arrived, the situation got worse. A female officer was physically assaulted, video of the attack spread across social media, and several other officers were attacked during the encounter. Multiple fights broke out because apparently one act of lawlessness just was not enough for the evening.
Officers made six arrests and confiscated an impressive arsenal that included several guns (some of them automatic) and, in a real creative touch, a homemade spear. Yes, a spear. Someone tied a knife to a stick. We have apparently looped all the way back around to medieval warfare, which is a development nobody had on their 2025 bingo card.
According to Spectrum, four juveniles were taken into custody and are facing charges including third-degree assault by mob, assault on police while resisting arrest, possession of a machine gun, and breach of peace. Two adults were also arrested. Sa'Mya Adriana Collette Weaver, 18, was charged with breach of peace and assault on police while resisting arrest. Giovanni Mekhi Sincere Campbell, 19, is being charged with possession of a machine gun.
The North Charleston Police Department issued a statement thanking community members who actually helped officers during the attacks, which is a nice way of saying "at least some of you did not try to stab us with a homemade spear." Multiple agencies responded to assist, including the Charleston County Sheriff's Office, Charleston Police Department, Berkeley County Sheriff's Office, and SC Highway Patrol.
The police chief noted that kids are simply not complying with law enforcement and said they need help dealing with the problem. When teenagers are showing up to block parties with machine guns and improvised polearms, that feels like a fair assessment.
