Mitch McConnell has been hospitalized for over three weeks now, and his office has developed a fascinating new communications strategy: just keep repeating the same sentence until everyone stops asking questions.
The 84-year-old Kentucky Republican has been in the hospital since June 14, when paramedics found him unconscious at his Washington, D.C., home and performed CPR after what emergency responders classified as a cardiac arrest. As Trending Politics reported, his office has offered virtually no new information about his condition despite growing questions from colleagues and the public alike.
A spokesperson told the Daily Caller News Foundation that the former Senate majority leader "continues to improve" and "is working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session." When the outlet asked for additional details, they got the exact same statement back. The office then issued the same update again on Thursday. At this point someone should check if the spokesperson is also unconscious and a chatbot has taken over.
"Senator McConnell appreciates the outpouring of support he's receiving while he continues his recovery in the hospital," the spokesperson told the DCNF. That is quite literally all anyone is getting.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune said on June 15 that McConnell remained "dialed in" during Republican conference calls and sounded good on the phone. That is a comforting data point from three weeks ago that has not been updated since. Meanwhile, Utah Sen. Mike Lee offered a refreshingly honest assessment on Tuesday: "Many of us aren't speaking about Mitch McConnell's condition because we know nothing about his condition."
The situation around McConnell's personal life has gotten stranger. Journalist Desiree Townsend reported that neighbors have not seen any activity at his Washington home since he was hospitalized. His wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, traveled to China during his hospital stay. His youngest daughter, Porter McConnell, deactivated her social media accounts as speculation intensified. None of this exactly screams "everything is fine."
Emergency dispatch audio released last week showed the call came in at 8:36 a.m. on June 14 for an "unconscious" person at McConnell's residence, with an Advanced Life Support crew responding.
McConnell's health has been a running concern for years now. He was hospitalized with flu-like symptoms in February and reportedly spent over a week in the ICU. He fell in the basement of the Russell Senate Office Building in October 2025 after a reporter questioned him about ICE while he tried to reach a handrail. He suffered a concussion from a fall in March 2023, sustained minor injuries in another fall in December 2024 that temporarily put him in a wheelchair, and experienced two viral on-camera freezing episodes during the summer of 2023.
At some point, the copy-paste statement from his office is going to need an update. Whether that update arrives before or after the Senate returns from recess is anyone's guess, because his colleagues sure do not have one.
