The city of Columbus, Ohio decided that the perfect way to kick off America's birthday week was by raising the flag of Somalia over City Hall, and as you might imagine, people had some thoughts about that. According to The American Tribune, the ceremony took place on June 30, 2026, in connection with Somalia's Independence Day on July 1, which marks the 1960 formation of the Somali Republic after colonial rule ended.

Now, Columbus does have one of the largest Somali populations in the entire country, and city leaders have done this kind of thing before, including lighting up City Hall blue and hoisting the Somali flag. But the timing this year really set people off, given that America's own Independence Day was just four days away. You know, the holiday where we celebrate the actual country whose buildings these are.

The Columbus Recreation and Parks Department posted about it on X, writing, "Happy Somali Independence Day! As we celebrate the unification of the Trust Territory of Somaliland and the State of Somaliland into the Somali Republic in 1960, City Hall will be raising the flag of Somalia." Nothing says Parks and Recreation like international diplomacy.

White House deputy chief of staff for policy Stephen Miller was quick to chime in, responding, "Columbus, Ohio raising the flag of Somalia for America 250." Short, sweet, and dripping with the kind of sarcasm you can feel through your screen.

According to a report from Fox News, journalist Mark Hemingway offered his take: "No American government building should ever be raising another country's flag. Ugh." Political commentator and lawyer Mehek Cooke added, "City Hall is not a foreign embassy. As an Ohioan, I am repulsed by the anti-Americanism here. Our leaders treat foreign nationalism as sacred while treating American patriotism as controversial. America's public buildings should honor America."

ACT for America founder Brigitte Gabriel went even further on social media: "This is AMERICA, not Little Somalia. Flying the Somali flag at City Hall isn't 'celebration.' It's cultural surrender. Other nations aren't parallel cultures here to dominate ours. Remove that flag. Remove the officials who demand it."

Supporters of the ceremony, as reported by Trending Politics News, argued it was simply a way to honor the Somali community's contributions to Columbus. Critics saw it as blue city leaders tripping over themselves to celebrate every identity except the American one.

The whole thing quickly ballooned into a larger debate about immigration, assimilation, and national identity. Social media was predictably on fire, with many residents viewing the flag raising as a symbol of the growing gap between urban leaders and the regular voters who just want to see Old Glory flying from government buildings. Especially, you know, during the week we literally celebrate the country those buildings belong to. Read the room, Columbus.
