Here is a pro tip for anyone who finds themselves in a traffic stop situation: do not attempt to use your vehicle as a weapon against the people with guns. It will not end well for you. Lorenzo Salgado Araujo of Mexico apparently did not receive this memo.
As Trending Politics reported, ICE confirmed that Araujo was shot and killed during a targeted enforcement operation in Houston, Texas on July 7, 2026 after he allegedly rammed an ICE vehicle and then tried to run over an agent. The incident happened around 6:50 AM, which means this guy chose violence before most people have even finished their first cup of coffee.
According to ICE's statement, agents attempted a vehicle stop as part of an operation to arrest an illegal alien. Araujo, described as an illegal alien from Mexico without legal status in the United States, decided that cooperating was not on his morning agenda. He allegedly rammed an ICE law enforcement vehicle, ignored multiple verbal commands, and then "weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE law enforcement officer resulting in our officer firing his weapon in self-defense," the ICE spokesperson said.
Araujo was struck by gunfire, received CPR at the scene, and was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. No ICE personnel were injured. At least one other individual, identified as Daniel Tirado Pantoja, was taken into ICE custody during the operation. So that went about as well as you would expect for everyone involved except the guy who thought a sedan was a suitable substitute for a battering ram.
The DHS Office of Inspector General is now leading an investigation into the shooting, while the FBI's Houston Field Office is running a separate investigation into the potential assault on a federal law enforcement officer. Two investigations for the price of one terrible decision.
This incident fits into a much larger and frankly alarming trend. DHS data shows that assaults on ICE officers have skyrocketed since President Trump returned to office in January 2025. From January 21, 2025 to January 7, 2026, ICE officers experienced 275 assaults compared to just 19 during the same period the prior year. That is a 1,347% increase for those of you keeping score at home.
The vehicular attack numbers are even more staggering. From January 21, 2025 to January 24, 2026, there were 68 vehicular attacks against ICE compared to only two in the prior year. That is a 3,300% increase. At some point you have to wonder if people are getting the idea from somewhere that attacking federal agents with cars is a reasonable life choice. Spoiler: it is not.
Customs and Border Protection officers have seen similar increases. Whatever is driving this trend (no pun intended), it is making an already dangerous job exponentially more so.
