Well, this is one way to absolutely tank your home sale.
Boston police responded to an "investigate person" call on Saturday at a Mattapan property and found a deceased individual inside. The home, as it turns out, belongs to Conan Harris, the husband of "Squad" member and U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA). As Trending Politics reported, the property had been on the market for about a month with an asking price of $1.15 million. Something tells me the open house schedule just got a lot more complicated.
"When they arrived, they found the person deceased," Boston Police Department spokesperson James Moccia said, adding that the homicide unit is now investigating. For those keeping score, that does not necessarily mean foul play is involved. Homicide units often handle death investigations as a matter of procedure. But it certainly does not scream "nothing to see here" either.
The property is a two-story, seven-bedroom home built in 1910, and city records confirm Harris as the owner, according to CBS News. Harris, 49, purchased it for $340,000 in 2021, and it now carries an assessed value north of $919,000. Not a bad return on investment, assuming you can get past the whole "someone died in it" complication. The home has functioned as a rental property, with long-term tenants living there.
Pressley's office released a statement noting that the congresswoman "extends her deepest condolences to the impacted family" and confirmed neither she nor Harris live at the residence. Meanwhile, realtor Chantae Turner, who listed the home, acknowledged the situation "sounds unfortunate, though." That is one way to describe it. Another way would be "a nightmare for my commission."
Here is a fun detail: earlier that same morning, before police were called to his rental property, Conan Harris was at a renaming ceremony at the Shaw-Roxbury Branch Library, delivering remarks on behalf of Rep. Pressley, according to the Boston Globe. So his Saturday went from ribbon cutting to crime scene tape in a matter of hours. Red crime scene tape was draped around portions of the property, which features a blue exterior and a white picket fence. Very Norman Rockwell, minus the dead body.
A neighbor also recalled a police raid at the property roughly two months before it was listed for sale. At that time, tenants occupied each floor, including high school-aged individuals, the Globe reported. So it sounds like this property had some history before it hit the market.
As of Saturday evening, authorities had not released the identity of the deceased, the cause of death, or any further details. The investigation remains active. No word yet on whether Harris plans to update the listing disclosure.
