Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the most recognizable figures in American politics for over two decades, died Saturday evening at his Washington, D.C., residence after what the medical examiner has now identified as an aortic dissection caused by arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. That is a fancy medical way of saying the main artery in his body tore open, which is about as serious as it sounds. Emergency dispatch audio and photographs have since emerged, as Conservative Brief reported, painting a clearer picture of what unfolded that night.

According to audio obtained by CNN and The Wall Street Journal, dispatchers received a report of a possible cardiac arrest at Graham's home, with first responders arriving shortly before 8:30 p.m. Here is where the evening got complicated. An unidentified woman, reportedly driving from Baltimore to the residence, called dispatchers to let them know the front door had been left unlocked. It was not unlocked. First responders found it locked, because of course they did, and at approximately 8:35 p.m. they radioed that they would force their way in.

About 15 minutes after entry, CPR was still in progress, and dispatchers sent a supervisor to assist. Photographs obtained by TMZ show paramedics wheeling Graham out on a stretcher while continuing medical care. The dispatch audio described the patient as 73 years old, though Graham had just turned 71 two days earlier. His name was never used on the radio, which is standard protocol, though the address (redacted in public releases) matched public records tied to Graham.

Graham's office announced early Sunday that the South Carolina senator, who had served since 2002, "passed away following a brief and sudden illness." Officials have not publicly confirmed the cause of death beyond the preliminary medical examiner findings, which note that the death certificate remains pending until toxicological and microscopic testing are finalized.

President Donald Trump, never one to let a moment pass without posting, took to Truth Social to pay tribute. "Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known, is dead!" Trump wrote, deploying his characteristic blend of admiration and exclamation points. "He was always working, and was a true American Patriot. Lindsey will be greatly missed!!! DETAILS AND ARRANGEMENTS TO FOLLOW. So sad!"

Jeffery W. Carroll, chief of the Metropolitan Police Department, and Francisco J. Diaz, the District of Columbia's chief medical examiner, issued a joint statement confirming the preliminary findings and explaining that comprehensive toxicology testing and microscopy both take time to complete. So the full picture may still shift slightly, but the initial finding of aortic dissection is about as clear cut a medical emergency as you will ever see.

Graham spent more than two decades in the Senate, outlasting political trends, multiple administrations, and roughly a dozen news cycles that would have buried lesser politicians. Whatever your opinion of the man, there is no disputing that he was a fixture. Washington will feel a little quieter without him, which, given how much that town loves the sound of its own voice, is really saying something.
