FBI forensic report suggests Alec Baldwin pulled trigger on set of ‘Rust:’ report

By Frank BojaziAugust 23, 2022Updated:August 20, 2025 Entertainment

(Crankers.com) The forensic report from the Federal Bureau of Investigation into the October shooting death on the set of the film “Rust” has been released and reports suggest that Alec Baldwin pulled the trigger on the set of ‘Rust’ leading to the accidental death of Halyna Hutchins.

Almost 10 months after the fatal “Rust” shooting, the FBI decided to provide the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office with the full forensic report. According to ABC News which obtained a copy of the report, the gun that actor Alec Baldwin used when cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot could not have been discharged unless the trigger had been pulled.

ABC News reveals that the FBI performed an accidental discharge test on the gun used in the fatal shooting of photography director Halyna Hutchins and found it “could not have been discharged without pulling the trigger.” In tests, the single-action revolver F.LLI Pietta .45 Colt did not fire without the trigger being pulled while the hammer was in the quarter or half cock position. According to the outlet, if the hammer was in its fully cocked position, the gun “could not be made to fire without a pull of the trigger while the working internal components were intact and functional.”

Back in December, Baldwin, who was holding the firearm on set, had told ABC News that he had not pulled the trigger on the gun. “The trigger was not pulled,” Baldwin said. “I didn’t pull the trigger.” He noted that he believed he was holding a “cold gun,” which means no live ammunition. There were 2 victims of the incident – Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed and Director Joel Souza was injured. In a recent statement, the attorney for Baldwin was quoted as stating to the media that the FBI report “is being misconstrued,” reported Fox 29 on the news.

The Santa Fe Sheriffs’ detectives confirmed that they received completed forensic reports from the FBI on Aug. 2. The reports were subsequently transferred to the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI) for review. “The OMI had advised the Sheriff’s Office that they required these forensic reports to finalize their investigation,” the release states. This week, the Office of the Sheriff was provided with the “official reports OMI.”

According to the release, detectives from the Suffolk County Police Department’s Homicide and Computer Crimes Unit in New York are continuing their ongoing efforts to assist the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office in acquiring and handling Alec Baldwin’s phone records.

“The District Attorney’s office has been working with Suffolk County PD, and Baldwin’s lawyer to acquire the phone records,” Adan Mendoza from the Santa Fe County Sheriff stated. “Once Suffolk County PD completes its agency assist and sends those records to New Mexico law enforcement, our detectives will need to then thoroughly review those phone records for evidentiary purposes.”

Besides the FBI investigation, the New Mexico Office of the Investigating Physician released a report that called the cause of death an accident, according to media outlets. A Santa Fe Sheriff’s investigation file will be sent to the District Attorney for review once the phone records have been obtained, together with the official IMO and forensic reports.
