Video shows Ohio shoplifting suspect try to shoot a cop, but chaos ensues instead

an attempted shoplifting arrest at a Walmart in Canton, Ohio, nearly turned fatal when a suspect tried to execute a police officer. The incident occurred in the store's loss prevention office as the officer was processing 21-year-old Shane C.L. Newman and 23-year-old Katerina D. Jeffrey for theft. Body camera footage shows Newman suddenly producing a handgun and pulling the trigger while aiming directly at the officer’s head from point-blank range.

The officer survived because the suspect's firearm malfunctioned and failed to discharge. Seeing the weapon, a Walmart asset protection employee immediately intervened, knocking the gun away from Newman. This distraction allowed the officer to tackle Newman to the ground and successfully restrain him.

Neither the officer nor the store employee was injured during the violent struggle. Following the arrest, Newman was charged with attempted murder, felonious assault on a peace officer, robbery, and having weapons under disability. Officers also discovered 50 "Molly" pills in his possession, leading to an additional charge of aggravated drug possession.

He is currently being held at the Stark County Jail on a $1 million bond, while Jeffrey is held on a $500,000 bond for complicity to commit robbery.
