High school runner gets smacked from behind mid-race

a high school track incident in Virginia went viral after a runner appeared to strike a competitor in the head with a relay baton mid-race.

During the 4x200-meter relay at the Virginia State High School League Indoor Championships, Alaila Everett of I.C. Norcom High School was captured on video swinging her baton and hitting Kaelen Tucker of Brookville High School as Tucker attempted to pass her. The blow caused Tucker to collapse and eventually leave the track; she was later diagnosed with a concussion and a possible fractured skull.

Following a review of the footage, Everett was disqualified for "contact interference" and subsequently charged with a misdemeanor of assault and battery. While the Tucker family and many online viewers viewed the strike as an intentional act, Everett and her family have publicly maintained that the collision was a complete accident caused by her losing her balance while pumping her arms, which everyone said was TOTAL BS.

The incident sparked national debate regarding sportsmanship and whether law enforcement should be involved in high school athletic disputes.

This event is often compared to a separate, well-known 2022 incident at the Tohopekaliga Tiger Invitational in Kissimmee, Florida. In that case, a runner named Nathan Carter was leading a 1,600-meter race when an athlete in a black uniform, who was not participating in the race, ran onto the track and sucker-punched him from behind.

Witnesses reported that the attacker was retaliating after Carter had pushed him out of the way on a previous lap because he was blocking the lane. Unlike the 2025 baton incident, police in the Florida case initially declined to file charges, characterizing the encounter as "mutual combat"
