Star Wars actor John Boyega attacks fans of the franchise as racist white elitists

Star Wars actor John Boyega attacks fans of the franchise as racist white elitists. Boyega was concerned about his experiences with the Star Wars franchise and its fanbase.

Boyega openly criticized a segment of the fanbase for directing racist harassment toward him and other actors of color (like Kelly Marie Tran). He described Star Wars as having an "elite white space" vibe and argued that while fans might tolerate actors of color in supporting "best friend" roles, they become hostile when those actors take the lead.

He also criticized Disney/Lucasfilm for inadequately developing the storylines for his character, Finn, and Kelly Marie Tran's character, Rose Tico, while prioritizing the arcs of white co-stars Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver. Boyega later indicated he felt some peace after a discussion with a Disney executive and seeing the company offer more public support to subsequent actors of color, such as Moses Ingram.
