Democrat Rep. from Georgia indicted for ridiculously stupid crime

Georgia State Representative Sharon Henderson, a Democrat from Covington, was recently arrested and indicted on federal charges related to pandemic unemployment fraud.

In June 2020, while a candidate for the Georgia House, Henderson applied for federal pandemic unemployment benefits, falsely claiming she was employed by the Henry County School District through March 2020 and was laid off due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In reality, she had only worked for the district for five days as a substitute teacher in 2018 and her contract acknowledged substitutes were ineligible for unemployment benefits.

She continued to submit weekly certifications for benefits even after being sworn into office in January 2021.

Henderson is accused of illegally collecting nearly $18,000 in benefits she was not entitled to receive.

Henderson was arrested on Monday, December 8, 2025, and is expected to enter a not-guilty plea. U.S. Attorney Theodore Hertzberg indicated that more indictments of other government officials related to pandemic fraud are likely to follow.

The case was investigated by multiple agencies, including the FBI, the U.S. Department of Labor Office of Inspector General, and the Georgia Office of the State Inspector General. The charges in the indictment are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
