Federal prosecutors have estimated that the total amount stolen across several connected fraud schemes in Minnesota exceeds $1 billion. Speaking on Fox News, Stephen Miller, the White House Deputy Chief of Staff at the time, called these investigations the "single greatest theft of taxpayer dollars through welfare fraud in American history" and claimed authorities had only "scratched the very top" of the operation.
