Trump Tells Thune to Cancel Vacation or Else, Basically

President Trump woke up on a Monday morning and chose violence, at least the political kind, firing off a couple of posts on Truth Social that essentially told Senate Majority Leader John Thune to park himself in Washington and forget about his August beach plans. As USA Journal reported, the messages were about as subtle as a freight train through your living room.

The gist? Trump wants the Senate to stay in session, nuke the filibuster, and ram through the SAVE America Act before anyone can pack a suitcase. He wrote that Thune "should not allow the United States Senate to leave town" until the bill passes or, even better, the filibuster gets permanently yeeted into the sun. He also called Democrats "Dumocrats," because apparently we are governed by people who communicate like middle schoolers writing on bathroom walls.

Then came round two, where Trump declared that whichever party kills the filibuster first "will be the Party that survives and thrives." Bold words from a man who signs his social media posts with his full government name like he is writing a formal letter to the HOA.

Now here is where it gets spicy. The Senate is scheduled for a "state work period" from August 10 through September 11. That is a fancy way of saying a month long vacation while the rest of us eat lukewarm lunch at our desks. Trump wants that canceled. Senators Mike Lee and Rick Scott are apparently cool with staying. Thune, however, has not budged, which is a bold strategy when your party leader is publicly dragging you across every platform he can find.

Trump already brought this up at a rally in Georgia last week, telling supporters to call Thune's office directly. Nothing says "healthy working relationship" quite like siccing your fan base on your own Senate leader.

The SAVE America Act, which focuses on election security, reportedly enjoys 83 percent public support. Even 72 percent of Democrats back it. It already cleared the House. So it is just sitting there in the Senate like a package on your porch that you refuse to bring inside for reasons nobody fully understands.

Trump's argument is straightforward. Progressive Democrats have openly pledged to eliminate the filibuster themselves if they retake power. Multiple Democratic leaders have confirmed this. So in Trump's view, Thune is heroically defending a rule that his opponents have already promised to torch the second they get the chance. It is like putting a padlock on a door that someone has already told you they plan to remove with a bulldozer.

With roughly 100 days until the midterms, this is shaping up to be quite the standoff. On one side, a president demanding action. On the other, a Senate leader apparently eyeing his calendar with great affection. The clock is ticking, the SAVE America Act is collecting dust, and somewhere John Thune is presumably staring at his phone thinking about whether he really needs that vacation after all.

Spoiler alert, Senator. You probably do not.
