The clock wars are officially ON, and Donald Trump is throwing his full weight behind killing the twice-a-year time change ritual once and for all.
The president is publicly pressuring Senate leaders to pass legislation that would make daylight saving time permanent across America. This comes after the House crushed it with a massive bipartisan 308 to 117 vote back in July, approving what is known as the Sunshine Protection Act. As Trending Politics reported, the bill would keep our clocks pushed one hour ahead all year long, giving everyone later sunsets even during the cold winter months.
So what is the holdup? The Senate, of course. Because nothing moves quickly in that chamber unless it involves naming a post office.
Trump told reporters in late July that he is rooting for the upper chamber to get moving. "Hopefully the Senate's going to approve that one," the president said. If they do not act, every American will still be fumbling with their clocks on November 1 like some kind of outdated tradition nobody asked for.
The White House argues that flipping clocks around costs families and businesses hundreds of millions of dollars in wasted productivity. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is also beating the drum, firing off a letter to Congress asking them to fold permanent daylight saving time into a big transportation package that needs renewal by September's end. Duffy's pitch? More evening sunlight could actually prevent traffic fatalities during peak driving hours.
But not everyone in the GOP is on board with this plan. Senator Tom Cotton from Arkansas has become a vocal opponent, warning that permanent daylight saving time would send millions of kids trudging off to school before the sun even rises. Senator Shelley Moore Capito from West Virginia echoed those worries, particularly for children in northern states who would be waiting at bus stops in total darkness.
The airline industry is also pumping the brakes, cautioning that a sudden switch could throw international flight schedules, crew assignments, and aircraft positioning into chaos.
Medical experts are split too. Sleep researchers agree that eliminating the jarring time shift would reduce short term health problems. However, many physician groups actually prefer permanent standard time instead, arguing that morning sunlight better matches our natural body clocks.
Here is the wild part. America already tried this exact experiment back during the 1970s energy crisis. Congress pulled the plug after public opinion tanked, largely because of those same concerns about kids heading to school in pitch black conditions.
The Senate actually passed an almost identical bill unanimously back in 2022, but the House let it die without a vote. Now the situation is reversed, with the House having already delivered. The ball sits squarely with Senate leadership.
With Trump vocally backing the measure and another annoying clock change looming in November, supporters believe this is the best chance in decades to finally end the madness.
