New York City Mayor Mamdani apparently thought he could sic the NYPD on a visiting allied head of state like he was some guy double parked on the Upper West Side. President Trump, as USA Journal reported, had a different idea. His Truth Social post Monday was nine words of pure shutdown: "Benjamin Netanyahu will not be arrested, in any way, shape, or form, while in the United States of America."
OK, fine, that was more than 9 words, but you get the idea.
No committee meeting. No interagency review. No thoughtful pause. Just a flat no delivered with all the subtlety of a brick through a window.
Netanyahu is in the country this week for the funeral of Senator Lindsey Graham, one of Israel's most vocal supporters in Congress. He was tentatively scheduled to meet with Trump on Monday. The Israeli Prime Minister is here to pay respects at a funeral, and the mayor of New York City was publicly entertaining the idea of having him detained. Read that sentence again and let it marinate.
Mamdani's legal basis for this stunt is, to put it charitably, imaginary. The ICC warrant he was referencing was issued by prosecutor Karim Khan, who is currently on administrative leave while under investigation for sexual misconduct. The United States is not a signatory to the Rome Statute. Israel is not a signatory to the Rome Statute. Foreign heads of state visiting for official purposes have diplomatic protections that a city mayor has roughly the same authority to override as he does to declare war on Belgium.
Mamdani's team reportedly had "active conversations" about the legal possibilities, which is a polite way of saying her lawyers spent billable hours explaining why he could not do the thing he wanted to do. Sometimes the most expensive legal advice you can get is someone telling you the obvious.
Senator John Fetterman called Mamdani a clown last week. Netanyahu pointed out that Mamdani condemns Israel while championing Hamas. And let us not forget that Mamdani's own officials allegedly tried to secretly meet with Iran's UN ambassador back in July before the State Department stepped in. That is the same Iran that Trump noted has killed 52,000 of its own citizens and spent 47 years targeting American soldiers. Interesting company to keep for someone supposedly concerned about international law.
What Mamdani attempted here was not governance. It was performance art for a very specific audience, and it had all the legal weight of a strongly worded tweet. He wanted to signal solidarity with a movement that treats Israel's existence as the core problem while conveniently ignoring the terrorism of Hamas.
The final scoreboard is simple. Netanyahu will attend Graham's funeral. He will meet with the President. He will not be arrested. And the mayor of New York City just got the most public "sit down" a local official has received from a sitting president in recent memory. Nine words. Discussion over.
