Footage from the stream, which most outlets chose not to share, reportedly showed Hilton covered in blood while holding a knife.
Authorities initially did not identify Hilton by name in their public statements, because apparently confirming someone's identity is harder than finding a parking spot at Costco on a Saturday. Deputies spoke with family members at the location and confirmed that Hilton was alone inside the home before making the decision to "tactically disengage," which is law enforcement speak for stepping back while keeping a watchful eye on everything.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office explained their approach in a statement to the Daily Mail, noting that when someone is experiencing a mental health crisis, deputies focus on de-escalation by creating time, distance, and opportunities to communicate. They also pointed out that unless other people are in immediate danger, slowing things down helps avoid a suicide-by-cop scenario and reduces the chance of anyone getting hurt. Eventually, deputies confirmed the individual was safely removed from the home and taken to the hospital.
