There is nothing quite like watching someone who lectures millions of people about privilege on daytime television deploy every ounce of privilege in their arsenal during a routine police stop. Sunny Hostin of "The View" was caught on police bodycam doing exactly that after her 24-year-old son Gabriel was stopped for trespassing near Metro-North Railroad tracks in Westchester County, as Trending Politics reported based on footage obtained by The New York Post.
Gabriel Hostin was detained shortly before 8 p.m. on June 16 near 24 Station Plaza in New Rochelle after being spotted on the right-of-way of active railroad tracks, in violation of posted no trespassing signs. The 2025 Harvard graduate told officers he had been running and noticed a gate near the tracks was open. Reasonable enough explanation. But then Mom got on the phone.
"My name is Sunny Hostin and I'm one of the co-hosts of 'The View' and I'm a former federal prosecutor," the 57-year-old told responding officers. She also helpfully informed them, "That's my son. He's a Harvard graduate, he doesn't have a criminal record."
Now look, every parent wants to help their kid out of a jam. That is completely understandable. But most parents do not roll up to a traffic stop and start reading off a LinkedIn profile. Hostin arrived at the scene and continued making the case, telling one of the four responding officers, "I'm a former federal prosecutor. He knows. He's a Harvard grad who teaches 4th grade geometry to South Bronx kids."
She added, "He's not a kid who's ever in trouble. It's an innocent mistake."
Gabriel also tried his hand at negotiating. "Is this necessary," he asked the officers, who responded in unison with a simple "Yes." He then followed up with, "What happens if you didn't do it?" referring to the summons. One officer made things crystal clear: "Because it is an arrestable offense. I want to make that clear, okay? Where you were on the tracks is an arrestable offense."
To their credit, the officers were not remotely swayed by celebrity status, cable news fame, or Ivy League credentials. They wrote the ticket anyway, though they did reduce the matter to a trespass violation because Gabriel had cooperated and was not in the most dangerous part of the track area. One officer even explained, "We know you're not a criminal or anything like that but our hands are tied with cameras everywhere."
Gabriel is due back in New Rochelle City Court on July 31, and Hostin is listed as representing him. In a letter obtained by TMZ, she argued to an assistant district attorney that the no trespassing sign was on an open gate and therefore not visible to her son as he entered the property.
The irony here is thick enough to stop a train. Hostin has spent years on "The View" discussing privilege, policing, and accountability with the confidence of someone who would never, ever play the "do you know who I am" card. Turns out the card was in her wallet the whole time, right next to the Harvard talking points. The officers, bless them, simply did not care.
