Oh, this is absolutely delicious. The national co-chair of Democratic Socialists of America went on a major radio program and boldly declared her organization wants to "tax the hell out of millionaires," then completely froze when the host simply asked her what that actually means.
Megan Romer sat down with David Remnick on "The New Yorker Radio Hour" and things went sideways fast, as Trending Politics reported. Remnick opened by questioning whether the DSA even believes millionaires should be allowed to exist. Romer said she's "less concerned about millionaires" and "more concerned about billionaires," adding that she doesn't have a firm threshold for when someone's wealth crosses into unacceptable territory.
She then pivoted to arguing that most billionaires accumulated their fortunes by exploiting working people. The real issue, she claimed, isn't some "arbitrary red line" about how much cash someone can have. It's whether exploitation is happening along the way.
But then she dropped the bomb. "We do believe in taxing the hell out of millionaires, yeah, absolutely," Romer proclaimed with full confidence.
Remnick, being a journalist who actually follows up, hit her with the obvious next question. What exactly does "taxing the hell out of them" look like in practice?
And that's when the wheels fell off.
"Yeah, you know, again, I don't have like a solid..." Romer stammered before trailing off into silence. Remnick jumped in and delivered the knockout blow, pointing out that as co-chair of the entire organization, shouldn't she have something more specific than a catchy slogan?
Romer acknowledged it was a fair point, then launched into vague talking points about democracy and examining spending needs. She mentioned not wanting to "depend on the existence of millionaires" because that supposedly means exploitation continues. Her answer essentially boiled down to: we'll figure it out later.
This awkward moment couldn't come at a more interesting time for the DSA. The organization is riding a massive wave of primary victories throughout the 2026 election cycle, knocking off established Democratic incumbents left and right.
In New York's June contests, DSA member Darializa Avila Chevalier toppled sitting Representative Adriano Espaillat. Claire Valdez, who aligns with the DSA, also beat Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso for an open seat. Out in Colorado, DSA-supported Melat Kiros unseated longtime Representative Diana DeGette. In Michigan, DSA-backed state Representative Donavan McKinney took down incumbent Representative Shri Thanedar, while Abdul El-Sayed knocked off Senator Haley Stevens in the Senate primary.
So the DSA is winning races everywhere, gaining real political power, and positioning itself as a serious force within the Democratic Party. Yet their top leader can't articulate the most basic details of their flagship economic proposal. They've got the slogan game down perfectly. The policy substance? Not so much.
If you're going to storm the gates of American politics with revolutionary fervor, maybe have a few numbers ready when someone inevitably asks you to show your work.
