Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, a Republican who has been a thorn in Donald Trump's side for years, announced on Friday that he will cast his ballot in favor of Todd Blanche for attorney general. And just like that, one of the biggest confirmation headaches for the White House evaporated overnight.
But hold on, because Cassidy did not go quietly. Before pledging his support, the senator decided to air out a whole laundry list of grievances about Blanche's performance at the Justice Department. He called out what he described as questionable decisions regarding an anti-weaponization fund and certain tax protections connected to the president. So basically, Cassidy wanted everyone to know he was NOT happy about this, even as he handed over his vote on a silver platter.
Here is where things get spicy. The senator framed his decision as a lesser of two evils situation. According to Cassidy, the real choice was not between Blanche and some flawless candidate. It was between Blanche and yet another acting attorney general potentially running the department into the ground. Not exactly a ringing endorsement, but hey, a yes vote counts the same whether it comes with confetti or complaints.
Cassidy also raised alarms about ongoing chaos at the Justice Department, arguing that leadership instability could derail progress on fighting violent crime, human trafficking, drug smuggling, and fraud. He was very clear that his vote was specifically about Blanche's qualifications in this particular moment, not some blanket endorsement of Trump's agenda.
So why does this matter so much? Because the math in the Senate is razor thin right now. Mitch McConnell remains absent due to health concerns, which means Republicans can only afford to lose two votes on this confirmation. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine already declared they would oppose Blanche. That made Cassidy the potential third domino that could have brought the whole thing crashing down.
Instead, he chose to step aside and let the confirmation proceed. The same senator who has repeatedly clashed with Trump and infuriated the MAGA faithful ultimately decided this was not his hill to die on.
With Cassidy now locked in, Blanche appears to have a much smoother road to becoming the next attorney general. For the Trump administration, this represents another significant win in their effort to install loyalists across the federal government. For Cassidy's critics who have labeled him a RINO for years, this is either a welcome surprise or proof that even the most stubborn holdouts eventually come around when the pressure gets hot enough.
