There are few things more satisfying than watching a United States senator confidently state something that is completely wrong, only to have the host politely inform him that he lives in the same state and knows better. That is exactly what happened Sunday morning when Senator Mark Warner went on ABC's This Week and ran face first into a Jonathan Karl fact-check, as USA Journal reported.
Warner, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee and a man who has spent considerable energy opposing the SAVE America Act (which would require photo ID to register and vote), decided to explain why the legislation is unnecessary. His argument was simple: Virginia already has voter ID and photo ID. He reportedly even started reaching for his wallet like he was about to show proof.
That is when Karl cut in with, "That's actually not the case. I mean, I'm a Virginia voter. You don't need to show a photo ID in Virginia."
The sound of a senator's talking point crumbling on live television is truly one of nature's most beautiful noises.
Warner's recovery attempt was to claim that signing an affidavit is basically the same as showing a photo ID. For those keeping score at home, a signature on a piece of paper and a government-issued card with your photograph on it are, in fact, two entirely different things. Virginia's own Department of Elections website confirms that voters who show up without acceptable ID can simply sign a statement and cast a regular ballot. No photo. No verification beyond your own penmanship.
So the senior senator from Virginia went on national television and confidently misrepresented the election laws of the state he has represented in Washington since 2009. That is seventeen years of presumably voting in Virginia without bothering to learn how voting in Virginia actually works.
The broader context here makes things even more interesting. Warner chaired the Senate Intelligence Committee from 2021 through 2025, the exact period during which, according to recently declassified intelligence, CIA analysts were allegedly softening assessments of Chinese election interference, FBI officials were allegedly running what they described as a "shadow government" to hide election intelligence from the White House, and NSA members were allegedly altering Presidential Daily Briefings. Warner had oversight responsibility for all of those agencies during that entire stretch.
Karl did not ask about any of that, which is a shame, because "what did you know about foreign election interference while you were the intelligence watchdog" seems like a slightly more important question than voter ID mechanics.
Polling consistently shows around eighty percent of Americans support photo voter ID requirements. Even seventy-one percent of Democrats support it. Warner just demonstrated on camera why his party keeps losing this particular debate: their own senior legislators cannot accurately describe the laws they are arguing about.
When your best defense of opposing voter ID is to falsely claim your state already has it, you might want to workshop the talking points a bit more before going on live television.
