South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has appointed Darline Graham Nordone, the only sibling of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, to fill his U.S. Senate seat on an interim basis. As Trending Views reported, the announcement came at a 4 p.m. press conference after the news had already done several laps around the internet, because nothing stays under wraps for more than eleven minutes anymore.
Graham passed away Saturday evening after suffering a cardiac event. McMaster apparently does not believe in letting the phone cool down, because he reached out to Nordone early Sunday morning to offer her the gig. He then ran the idea past President Donald Trump, who gave it his full backing, because of course a staffing decision in the United States Senate now includes a presidential cosign before breakfast.
Trump, never one to let a decision happen without publicly announcing he was involved, posted on Truth Social: "I recommended, to Governor Henry McMaster, Lindsey Graham's wonderful sister, Darline, to serve as interim Senator from the Great State of South Carolina. This would be a fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly."
Nordone accepted the role and thanked the governor and the people of South Carolina for what she called the "honor and privilege" of continuing her brother's work. She also pledged to support Trump's agenda going forward, which is pretty much the cover charge for entering Republican politics these days.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune added his stamp of approval, telling reporters the pick would "make a lot of sense." A ringing endorsement from a man who has clearly mastered the art of saying something without saying anything.
Under South Carolina law, McMaster has the authority to appoint someone to fill a Senate vacancy until a special election can be held. Nordone will serve the remainder of Graham's term, which runs through January 2027. Graham held that seat since 2003, so it is technically being kept in the family for the first time, which is either heartwarming or very on brand for American politics depending on your perspective.
Nordone, also known as Darline Graham, lived a relatively private life compared to her brother. Graham, who never married and had no children, frequently described her as a central part of his personal support system, particularly after the deaths of their parents.
As for what comes next, the seat is not staying quiet for long. Because Graham had already locked up the Republican nomination for the 2026 general election before his death, state election rules require a special primary to select a new GOP nominee. That primary is currently set for August 11, 2026, with the general election in November.
The names already circling the runway include Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette, who just narrowly lost a gubernatorial runoff to Attorney General Alan Wilson, and U.S. Representatives Ralph Norman and Nancy Mace. So the jockeying has begun approximately forty eight hours after the man's passing, which is actually restrained by South Carolina standards.
