Secretary of State Marco Rubio has decided that far-left political violence deserves the same level of attention as jihadist terrorism, and he hosted a whole international summit to make the point. As Trending Views reported, Rubio convened something called the Ministerial on the Resurgence of Political Terrorism, bringing together officials from the Western Hemisphere, Europe, and Asia. The agenda: better information sharing, law enforcement coordination, and travel restrictions targeting violent far-left and anarchist networks. Basically, the counterterrorism playbook that already exists for jihadists, but now pointed in a different direction.
Rubio opened by taking a well-earned victory lap on jihadist terrorism in Europe. "The number of people killed by jihadist terrorism in Europe dropped by roughly 97 percent from the year 2015 to the year 2024," he said. "In other words, to a very great extent, our counterterrorism strategy has worked." Hard to argue with a 97 percent reduction. That is an A+ on the report card by any measure.
But then came the pivot. "For far too long, our counterterrorism doctrine has had a blind spot. A blind spot when it comes to extremist violence from the political left," Rubio said. He argued that while the jihadist threat has been "severely diminished," far-left violence never got the same serious treatment from policymakers. Which, if you have been paying attention to literally anything since 2016, is not exactly a hot take.
The State Department came armed with numbers. Between 1970 and 1980, far-left terrorists were responsible for 93% of terrorist attacks and 58% of terrorism-related deaths in the West. More recently, far-left plots and attacks have sharply increased in both the U.S. and Europe since 2016. In 2025 alone, far-left actors accounted for 63% of recorded anti-government attacks or plots in the United States. Over in Europe, 2024 saw 21 attacks attributed to far-left and anarchist terrorists compared with 24 jihadist attacks. So the two categories are nearly neck and neck, which is not a competition anyone should want to win.
Europe has also seen record numbers of attacks on rail networks, critical infrastructure, and private businesses over the past three years. The State Department described the broader threat as "transnational far-left terrorism," noting overlap between these networks and violent anti-American, antisemitic, and anti-tech movements. A real who's who of terrible ideologies finding common ground.
The department has already designated four violent far-left groups as Foreign Terrorist Organizations and Specially Designated Global Terrorists, with more designations under review. In December 2025, they announced Rewards for Justice offers of up to $10 million for information that disrupts financial mechanisms supporting these groups. Ten million dollars is a lot of motivation for someone to start talking.
Whether this represents a genuine strategic shift or a political rebranding exercise will depend entirely on what comes next. Summits are easy. Sustained international law enforcement cooperation against decentralized anarchist networks is considerably harder. But at least someone finally noticed the blind spot, even if it took a few decades.
