Rhode Island State Representative Enrique Sanchez, a proud Democratic Socialists of America endorsee, decided this week was the perfect time to hop on X and warn ICE agents that "your day of reckoning will come." Bold words from a guy who, as we'll get to shortly, has his own colorful history with law enforcement.
As USA Journal reported, the Department of Homeland Security didn't bother getting into a profanity contest with Sanchez. Instead, they did something far more effective. They simply started listing the convicted criminals that ICE has been removing from Rhode Island, essentially saying, "Oh, you want to talk about who we're deporting? Let's talk about who we're deporting."
The roster of individuals DHS highlighted is absolutely horrifying. Phet Phommasinh, from Laos, convicted of homicide, assault, and aggravated assault with a weapon. Mariel Valdez Nunez, from the Dominican Republic, convicted of human slavery or trafficking. And Touthtou Sengsavang, also from Laos, convicted of molesting a minor, selling cocaine, failing to register as a sex offender, and additional sex offenses against a child. That wasn't even the complete list. DHS kept posting more.
So when Sanchez threatens federal agents with vague promises of cosmic justice, these are precisely the types of people his rhetoric is functionally defending. Not exactly a winning lineup to go to bat for, politically speaking.
Now, about that "day of reckoning" language. Federal law under 18 U.S.C. Section 115 actually prohibits threatening federal law enforcement officers with the intent to intimidate or interfere with their duties. Sanchez isn't some anonymous keyboard warrior. He's an elected state representative making these statements on a public platform. Will anyone actually pursue charges? Almost certainly not, which kind of proves the whole point about selective accountability.
Then came the cherry on top. Libs of TikTok helpfully reminded everyone that Sanchez himself has a DUI on his record. So we've got a state legislator with his own arrest history out here playing tough guy against the people removing convicted murderers and child predators from his state. The jokes truly do write themselves.
DHS also dropped a statistic that deserves way more attention. Assaults against ICE officers have surged by 1,300 percent, which they attribute directly to the ongoing campaign to demonize immigration enforcement. That's not a small increase. That's a number so large it looks like a typo. Every politician who paints ICE agents as villains and every activist who obstructs enforcement operations is contributing to an environment where federal officers face attacks at unprecedented rates.
Sanchez will probably cruise to reelection because his constituents apparently knew exactly what they were getting when they voted for a DSA candidate who threatens federal agents on social media. That's democracy for you. But for everyone else in Rhode Island and across the country, DHS made sure the record is crystal clear about what kind of individuals are being removed and who is fighting to keep them around.
They brought receipts. Lots of them.
