Ladies and gentlemen, we have reached peak absurdity in American politics, and honestly, I didn't think we could top last week. During a House Oversight subcommittee hearing on Tuesday that was supposed to be about the Smithsonian Institution and American history, Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Texas decided to pivot hard into soccer territory, as first reported here. Because nothing says "productive use of congressional time" like grilling a historian about the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
Crockett asked historian David Blight to explain why fans around the globe seemed to favor one squad over another when Argentina faced Spain in this past weekend's championship match. Her theory? That cheering for Argentina was basically a racist act, because of the racial makeup of each team's roster. You know, just normal oversight committee stuff.
She pointed out that people of color were represented on many World Cup squads and suggested that global fan preferences boiled down to skin color rather than, oh I don't know, literally anything else about sports fandom. She then asked Blight to take a guess at why fans leaned a certain way.
Blight, bless his heart, gave the most reasonable answer imaginable. He suggested that maybe, just maybe, Spain had the superior squad and that's why people supported them. You know, the way sports have worked since the beginning of recorded civilization. People like good teams. Revolutionary concept.
Crockett was not having it. She pushed back and declared that Argentina carries a racist history, apparently making any support for the team a moral failing. So if you were watching the World Cup final and happened to pull for Argentina because you liked their style of play or enjoyed watching their strikers, congratulations, you're now a bigot according to a sitting member of Congress.
This is the same congresswoman who just weeks ago defended convicted murderer Karmelo Anthony, the individual who fatally stabbed 17 year old Austin Metcalf at a track meet in Frisco, Texas. Crockett suggested she would have done the same thing in that situation. She then fabricated a scenario involving a 300 pound man beating someone down to justify the stabbing, which did not match the actual circumstances of the case whatsoever. She even floated the idea that football players' hands could be considered deadly weapons, while noting that golfers' hands probably wouldn't qualify. So at least golfers can breathe easy.
To recap: picking a soccer team is now racist, and bringing a knife to a high school track meet is apparently justified self defense. This is where we are. This is what congressional hearings have become. Somewhere, the Founding Fathers are looking down and wondering if maybe they should have added a few more checks and balances.
At this rate, by next month she'll be telling us that preferring vanilla ice cream is a hate crime.
