South Carolina Congressman Ralph Norman has decided that one chamber of Congress simply is not enough, announcing Saturday that he is running for the Republican nomination to fill the late Lindsey Graham's Senate seat. Because why settle for being one of 435 when you can be one of 100?
As Trending Politics reported, Norman, a House Freedom Caucus member who has represented South Carolina's 5th congressional district since 2017, made the announcement on X before hopping on Fox News to make it extra official. Graham died unexpectedly on July 11 at the age of 71 after serving in the Senate since 2003.
"For years, Senator Lindsey Graham fought hard to save America and defend South Carolina. Now, President (Donald) Trump needs another proven America First conservative in the US Senate to deliver on those America First priorities," Norman posted on X.
During his Fox News appearance with host Kayleigh McEnany, Norman laid out his pitch: "I'm here to announce that I will be a candidate for the Senate, I'll be throwing my hat into the ring, and day one, Kayleigh, I will be laser-focused on passing President Trump's America First agenda." He specifically named the SAVE America Act, an election integrity bill that is President Trump's top legislative priority, as item number one on his to-do list.
Norman had actually been running for governor in 2026 and is not seeking re-election to the House this cycle, so the man was already in "new job" mode. He just changed which new job he wanted. A lateral move with better parking, if you will.
The procedural side of all this is a fascinating little obstacle course. Governor Henry McMaster appointed Graham's sister, Darline Graham Nordone, as interim senator on July 13, and she was sworn in the next day. She will hold the seat until the term expires in January. Since Graham had already won the Republican nomination in the June 9 primary before his passing, South Carolina law triggers a special process to pick a replacement nominee for the November 3 general election.
The special filing period for Republican candidates opens at noon on July 21 and closes at noon on July 28. A statewide special Republican primary is set for August 11, with early voting running August 5 through 7. If nobody gets a majority, a runoff happens on August 25. There is one notable catch: if you voted in the June Democratic primary, you are not eligible to participate in this special Republican primary. So choose your primaries wisely, South Carolina.
Norman enters what could become a crowded field, but he has the advantage of already being a sitting congressman with statewide name recognition and a Freedom Caucus pedigree that plays well with the Republican base. Whether that is enough to win a compressed primary campaign remains to be seen, but the man is clearly not interested in a quiet retirement.
