The Pentagon wants to keep National Guard troops stationed in Washington, D.C., all the way through January 20, 2029, which just so happens to be the exact last day of President Trump's second term. Convenient timing, that.
The plan was finalized late last year and is sitting on War Secretary Pete Hegseth's desk awaiting final approval, which two U.S. officials say he is widely expected to grant, according to ABC News. Pentagon press secretary Kingsley Wilson offered the classic non-answer when asked, saying there were "no announcements to make at this time" while also noting the Defense Department remains "committed to supporting the President's mission to address the epidemic of crime in our Nation's capital." So, no announcement, but also here is basically an announcement. Got it.
As Trending Politics reported, the mission goes by the name "Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful," which sounds less like a military operation and more like a Home and Garden show on basic cable. And honestly, the duties kind of match. Guard personnel are doing community safety patrols, traffic control, monument security, and protection of federal facilities, but they are also picking up trash, doing landscaping, and removing graffiti. You sign up to serve your country and they hand you a leaf blower.
Troops have been a visible presence at Metro stations, downtown D.C., and the National Mall since the mission launched in August 2025 with roughly 800 D.C. National Guard members. The numbers have fluctuated since then. ABC News cited approximately 2,865 personnel in March 2026, drawn mostly from Republican-led states like Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Oklahoma, along with D.C. Guard units. Other reports have put figures anywhere from 2,600 to north of 5,000 at various points. Some troops have been there almost continuously since launch, while others rotate through shorter stints.
A Joint Task Force D.C. spokesperson said, "The D.C. National Guard remains focused on its mission assisting the Metropolitan Police Department and federal partners with monument security, community safety patrols, and the protection of federal facilities. Our Soldiers continue to provide traffic control and area beautification to safeguard District residents and visitors."
The Defense Department also has authorization to mobilize additional forces in coordination with state governors, so there is room to scale up if needed.
Now, is it working? According to D.C. Metropolitan Police data for 2026 year to date as of early July, overall crime is down 21 percent, property crime dropped 23 percent, and motor vehicle thefts are down substantially compared to the prior year. Robbery also saw reductions. Say what you will about having thousands of Guard members roaming your city, but criminals apparently do not enjoy the company.
Whether you think this is a necessary public safety measure or the world's most over-staffed landscaping crew depends entirely on your politics. Either way, D.C. is getting its hedges trimmed through 2029.
