The U.S. Department of Justice is looking into former Missouri Congresswoman Cori Bush over her campaign’s spending on personal security, particularly payments made to her now-husband, Cortney Merritts.
Records from the Federal Election Commission show her campaign paid him more than $90,000 for security services and wages.
The investigation, which includes a grand jury subpoena to the House Sergeant at Arms, is checking if these payments followed House ethics rules that allow paying family members for legitimate services as long as they don’t exceed fair market value.
Bush insists she’s done nothing wrong, saying she’s fully cooperated with the DOJ and that the spending is necessary due to ongoing threats to her safety. She also claims her husband has strong security experience and charged at or below fair market rates.
