Most people spend the Fourth of July eating hot dogs and watching things explode in the sky. Jason Horne of the Midlothian Fire Department spent his doing what firefighters apparently cannot stop doing even when they are not on the clock: saving lives.
As The American Tribune reported, Horne was off duty and enjoying the holiday at Lake Alvarado in Texas on July 4, 2026, when a boat carrying nine passengers capsized and trapped three children underneath it. A group of bystanders flagged Horne and his daughter Emilie down, and the two immediately jumped into action. Because apparently "off duty" is just a suggestion when you are wired like this guy.
According to a report from WFAA, Horne dove under the capsized boat and found a little boy, pulling him to safety. Then he went back under. Because one rescue was not enough for a Tuesday (technically a Friday, but you get the point). Under the boat he felt a child's foot, a little girl, and tore her free. She had no pulse. Horne pulled her onto the hull of the overturned boat and performed CPR until she started breathing again.
Still not done. Horne and several other individuals flipped the entire boat right side up and found another little boy tangled in anchor rope with no pulse. He revived that child too. Three kids rescued, two revived. All while technically on vacation.
The Alvarado Fire Department recently hosted a reunion between Horne, his daughter, the responding crew, and the families of the children he saved. Chief John Rodgers of the Alvarado Fire Department put it plainly in a Facebook post: "I have been working water emergencies my whole 30 year career and they very rarely have this type of positive outcome."
Rodgers continued, "There is no doubt, we have 3 young children alive and well today because of the quick and decisive actions of Jason and Emilie Horne. We are proud to have shared this moment."
Horne's own department at Midlothian praised him as well, saying, "When others needed help most, Jason did what firefighters do. He stepped up without hesitation."
Meanwhile, his 12 year old daughter Emilie watched the whole thing unfold. Most kids that age are learning life lessons from TikTok. She got to watch her dad physically wrestle children away from death multiple times in a row. That is going to make every "what did your dad do this summer" conversation at school pretty awkward for the other kids.
The story blew up on social media, where one user commented, "What an incredible demonstration of God putting the right man in the right place at the right time. Providential and heroic." Another said, "There's a man who should never have to pay for a drink for the rest of his life."
Honestly, that second one feels like the bare minimum. Someone get this man a parade.
