A resurfaced video from Barack Obama's 2008 campaign trail has conservatives doing victory laps, and honestly, you can't blame them. As Conservative Brief reported, the clip shows the future 44th president delivering talking points that sound like they were ripped straight from a Trump rally teleprompter.
In the footage, which was reposted on July 23 by Kevin Bass and quickly went viral on X, Obama absolutely torched the George W. Bush administration for bungling immigration enforcement. He pointed out that five million undocumented workers had crossed into the country during Bush's time in office, calling it "an extraordinary problem." Conservative commentators shared it everywhere, essentially saying, "See? Even YOUR guy agreed with us!"
Obama went on to argue that unchecked illegal immigration drove wages down for American workers and let shady employers take advantage of undocumented laborers by ignoring minimum wage requirements and worker safety regulations. He talked about the strain on housing, schools, and healthcare in local communities. If you closed your eyes, you'd swear you were listening to a Republican primary debate circa 2024.
The then Illinois senator even promised that border security would be his number one priority as president. Number two? Going after employers who hired illegal workers. He dropped this absolute gem of a line: employers had a better shot at getting struck by lightning than facing prosecution for hiring undocumented labor. That's the kind of soundbite political consultants dream about.

Now here's where things get spicy. Obama actually followed through on some of this rhetoric. His administration boosted border security funding, rolled out surveillance technology, and prioritized removing immigrants convicted of serious crimes or flagged as national security risks. Deportation numbers hit record highs during his first term, which earned him the delightful nickname "Deporter in Chief" from immigration advocates who were not exactly thrilled.
But Obama also pushed Congress to pass comprehensive reform combining tougher enforcement with a path to legal status for undocumented people already living here. When Congress predictably did absolutely nothing, because that's what Congress does best, he created the DACA program through executive action in 2012. He later tried expanding protections through DAPA, which got slapped down by the courts.
Trump attempted to kill DACA during his first term using executive authority, mirroring the same mechanism Obama used to create it. The courts blocked that too, and eventually the Supreme Court upheld the program.
So basically, Obama talked tough on the border in 2008, delivered some results, then pivoted to executive actions that infuriated the right. Meanwhile, today's Democratic Party has largely abandoned the rhetoric Obama used on that campaign trail. Politics is a wild ride, folks. The only consistent thing about it is the inconsistency.
