Somebody really needs to sit Zohran Mamdani down and gently explain to him that being mayor of New York City is a slightly different gig than being an activist backbencher in the state Assembly. The socialist turned city leader is encouraging residents to flood the streets in protest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's upcoming visit, and as Conservative Brief reported, the NYPD is absolutely thrilled about it. Just kidding. They are furious.
Let's set the scene here. The police department just survived a brutal summer that included providing security for the FIFA World Cup, Fourth of July celebrations, and America 250 events that brought millions of people into the city. Officers pulled grueling 12 hour shifts for weeks on end. The Knicks were apparently also part of this exhaustion marathon. And now, just as cops are finally catching their breath, the mayor is basically sending out invitations for mass demonstrations. Cool, cool, cool.
Patrick Hendry, president of the NYPD's Police Benevolent Association, did not mince words. He said Mamdani's "activist posturing" puts officers in a horrible spot. His concern? When the actual mayor of a city calls for protests, the more chaotic elements of society interpret that as a green light to go absolutely wild. Hendry also pointed out that the department's ability to respond to protests is already limited thanks to a lawsuit settlement the city agreed to over his organization's objections. So basically, the cops have one hand tied behind their back and the mayor just threw a party.
Here's the truly beautiful part of this saga. During his campaign, Mamdani boldly proclaimed he would have Netanyahu arrested if the prime minister set foot in New York, citing a 2024 International Criminal Court warrant related to alleged war crimes in Gaza. Bold talk! Powerful energy! One tiny problem, though. This week, Mamdani quietly admitted he has zero legal authority to actually do that. So his big plan went from "arrest a world leader" to "hey everybody, grab some poster board and meet me outside." What a pivot.
At City Hall, Mamdani told reporters that protest is something the city will always respect, and that honoring the Constitution means honoring the First Amendment. Nobody is arguing with that, Zohran. The question is whether the guy running the city should be the one actively recruiting demonstrators while his police force is running on fumes.
One Manhattan officer asked the New York Post if Mamdani was even serious. A Brooklyn cop called him "nothing more than a cheap politician looking for cheap headlines" who knew full well he could not arrest Netanyahu. And a veteran officer posed the question that seems to be on every cop's mind: when will this guy figure out he is not an activist anymore?
Another officer suggested that perhaps the mayor should focus on governing and keeping peace rather than using fiery rhetoric that could push things toward chaos. You know, just normal mayor stuff. But hey, who needs sleep when you can have a good protest?
