The rank and file officers were somehow even less diplomatic. One Manhattan cop noted that the force just endured six grueling weeks of overtime covering the Knicks playoff run and the World Cup, and now their own mayor is manufacturing additional chaos like it's a hobby. A Brooklyn officer called Mamdani "nothing more than a cheap politician looking for cheap headlines" who always knew he lacked arrest authority and is now rallying the exact crowd most likely to transform a peaceful march into something far worse.
A department veteran offered perhaps the most devastating assessment, saying the mayor should focus on governing and maintaining order rather than essentially giving "crazy people" a signal that anything goes without consequences. He added that if an officer gets injured, the blame falls squarely on Mamdani.
Detectives' Endowment Association President Scott Munro delivered the knockout punch, saying Mamdani "still acts like he's leading a protest movement instead of running the largest city in America." Munro warned that the mayor is rolling out the welcome mat for agitators who seek confrontation and violence, while detectives will be the ones paying the price. His suggestion? Maybe the 96 unions in the New York State Public Safety Alliance should organize a lawful demonstration right outside Gracie Mansion so the mayor can experience what it feels like when someone encourages protests aimed at you.
