A coalition of New York City property owners is taking Mayor Zohran Mamdani to court over his two year rent freeze, calling the entire process a rigged carnival game where the prize was already decided before anyone stepped up to play. They're saying the whole thing was cooked from the start, calling it "predetermined" and "irrational" and accusing the board of twisting its own numbers like a pretzel to hand Mamdani a political trophy. Remember, this is the guy who literally ran on a promise to freeze rents. So appointing six of the board's nine members and then claiming the body is "independent" is kind of like picking your own jury and insisting the trial was fair.

One of the plaintiffs, a landlord named Violet Zharku, put it bluntly. She explained that freezing rent doesn't magically freeze her mortgage payments, property taxes, insurance premiums, water bills, or repair costs. It's almost like buildings require money to maintain. Who knew?
The group, which collectively owns more than 100 rent stabilized units, is asking a judge to block the freeze before it kicks in this October.
