Ceuta was thrown into chaos in late July 2026 after an estimated 70,000 to 80,000 migrants reportedly crossed into the territory in just 48 hours.
Local hospitals, temporary shelters, and food supplies were quickly overwhelmed, while crowded streets and beaches forced some businesses to close and brought normal civic life to a standstill.
The greatest toll was human rather than structural, with reports claiming at least 90—and possibly more than 140—people died from drowning or crowd crushes near the breakwaters.
Although authorities did not release a specific price tag for physical damage, the crossing created a massive humanitarian crisis and sparked serious diplomatic tensions.
