New Sen. Graham Threatens to Block Senate Vacation Over Vote

South Carolina's freshly sworn in Republican Senator Darline Graham has decided that nobody gets to go on summer vacation until Congress does its homework. As Conservative Brief reported, Graham announced Monday that she will personally stand in the way of the Senate's recess unless lawmakers actually vote on the SAVE America Act, which would mandate proof of citizenship for voter registration and photo ID at polling locations.

Graham, who replaced her late brother Lindsey Graham after he passed away unexpectedly from an aortic rupture, was only sworn in on July 14. So she's been on the job for roughly two weeks and is already picking fights with Senate leadership. Most people spend their first two weeks at a new gig figuring out where the coffee machine is. Not this woman.

"President Trump is 100% correct. The SAVE America Act is top priority. I will stay here as long as necessary to get it passed and signed into law," Graham declared, adding that she came to Washington to fight for South Carolinians and deliver on a conservative agenda. She is serving out the remainder of her brother's term through January 2027.

Her stance puts her squarely on Team Trump, who went absolutely nuclear on Senate Majority Leader John Thune on Monday. The former and current president hopped on Truth Social to demand that Thune either pass the bill or blow up the filibuster entirely. Trump called Democrats "Dumocrats" because apparently we're workshopping nicknames at a fourth grade reading level now, and warned that "stupidity always brings LOSING & DEATH!" He also somehow referenced 1929, presumably comparing the debt ceiling situation to the Great Depression, because subtlety has never been his thing.

Thune, for his part, keeps insisting the votes simply are not there under current Senate rules. North Carolina Republican Thom Tillis was even blunter, calling the whole effort a "waste of time." That comment has gone over about as well as you'd expect with the Trump wing of the party.

Graham is not alone in her recess hostage strategy. Utah Senator Mike Lee was actually the first to publicly threaten blocking the break. Republican Senators Jim Banks of Indiana, Tommy Tuberville of Alabama, Ashley Moody of Florida, and Rick Scott of Florida have similarly called for cancelling the summer getaway. So basically a growing group of senators has formed what amounts to a "nobody leaves until we clean our room" coalition.

Meanwhile, over in the House, Republicans narrowly passed a fiscal year 2027 appropriations bill by a vote of 217 to 209 that funds the State Department and national security programs. They cleverly attached the SAVE Act to that legislation using a procedure called MIRVing before shipping it to the Senate. One Democrat crossed the aisle to support it, while one Republican voted against it.

So now the ball is in the Senate's court, and a bunch of Republican senators are essentially threatening to cancel everyone's beach plans until something happens. Washington in the summer without air conditioned recess, truly the stuff of legislative nightmares.
