In a plot twist worthy of a small-town legal drama, Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway gave Ray County Prosecutor Camille Johnston the boot.
On Thursday, Hanaway’s office dropped court papers like hot gossip at a family reunion, and a judge wasted no time signing a preliminary order to show Johnston the door.
The official reason? A quo warranto declaring Johnston had “forfeited the office” thanks to some alleged romantic entanglements that, at best, screamed “conflict of interest” louder than a karaoke night gone wrong.
In other words, you can't f#ck the illegal immigrants your office is supposed to be investigating.
When reached for comment, Johnston passed the mic to her lawyer, Chad Gardner, who delivered the classic legal line: no comment.
The quo warranto references a suspect in a sexual assault case identified as "J.G.," with whom Johnston had a romantic relationship. The initials and the nature of the investigation mirror exclusive reporting from KSHB 41's Sarah Plake in September 2025, detailing a relationship between Johnston and a man named Juan David Gutierrez.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Missouri Attorney General's office investigated and prosecuted Gutierrez's case due to a conflict of interest.
The quo warranto adds context to KSHB 41's reporting, saying Johnston visited "J.G." in Mississippi, "where he had absconded, and subsequently went to Florida to vacation with J.G."
