House Speaker Mike Johnson grabbed the microphone on Wednesday and basically delivered a monologue that sounded like the opening scene of a political thriller. According to Conservative Brief, the Louisiana Republican told reporters that America is staring down a Marxist movement, and he was not exactly subtle about it.
The barbarians are in the gate, Johnson proclaimed, which is honestly one of the most dramatic things anyone has said at a podium since someone invented podiums. Not approaching the gate. Not knocking on the gate. They are IN it. The gate has been breached, people. This is not a drill.
Johnson, who also happens to be a constitutional attorney, argued that the upcoming November midterm elections are not your run of the mill squabble over tax brackets or regulatory policy. No, this is what he called a philosophical war over the entire American experiment. He said that for the first time in his lifetime, the very concept of self governance is being challenged in a congressional election cycle. He had hoped and prayed it would never reach this point, but here we are, folks.
The Speaker then channeled his inner Ronald Reagan, reminding everyone that the Gipper once warned freedom is just one generation away from going extinct. Reagan was talking about the Soviet Union back then, but Johnson says that socialist thinking has now planted itself right here on American soil. He even pointed to the In God We Trust motto hanging in the House chamber, which was put up in 1962 during the Cold War, as a reminder of what the country is supposed to stand for.
Then came the receipts. Johnson went after the Democratic Socialists of America, citing their own platform, which apparently includes packing the Supreme Court, getting rid of the Senate entirely, abolishing all borders, granting amnesty to literally everyone, emptying out prisons, and completely defunding police. So, you know, light stuff.
Johnson referred to what he called crazy little mini Mamdanis popping up across the country and warned they pose a genuine danger to families everywhere. He repeated the phrase this is not a game three separate times, just in case anyone in the room thought it might be some kind of recreational activity.
He also took a moment to remind journalists in attendance that even if they disagree with Republican policies, they should probably care about foundational principles since those are the things keeping them free. Nothing says press conference like telling reporters you are saving them whether they like it or not.
The Speaker described himself as a happy warrior, though he made it clear the era of playing nice is over. He wrapped up by drawing a line between American governance and communism, saying rights come from God and not from the state. Communists, he argued, believe the government IS God and can hand out or revoke rights whenever it feels like it.
So to recap, Johnson wants you to know this is serious, the barbarians have arrived, freedom is on life support, and he is the happy warrior standing between you and total ideological collapse. Other than that, just a normal Wednesday on Capitol Hill.
