The Democratic Party is currently experiencing what therapists would call an identity crisis, and Michigan voters got to weigh in on Tuesday in what might be the most revealing primary of the year. As Conservative Brief reported, the state's Senate primary pitted Rep. Haley Stevens, the more centrist option, against Abdul El-Sayed, a former public health official who happens to be the favorite candidate of the Democratic Socialists of America. You know, totally mainstream stuff.
Now here is where things get really entertaining. El-Sayed has apparently been sprinting away from the DSA platform in recent days like someone who accidentally liked their ex's Instagram photo from 2014. The only problem? Fox News contributor Charlie Hurt pointed out on Monday that El-Sayed's previously stated positions match up perfectly with everything the DSA stands for. We are talking Medicare for All, abolishing ICE, making the Supreme Court answer to Congress, slapping a wealth tax on the richest Americans, and cutting off all foreign and military aid to Israel. But sure, totally not a socialist.
Oh, and he also says he supports capitalism. He just wants to "reform" it. Which, as anyone with a dictionary knows, typically translates to "more government regulation." It is like saying you love pizza but want to replace the cheese, sauce, and crust with kale.
The winner of this philosophical cage match will replace retiring Sen. Gary Peters, who endorsed Stevens because apparently he wanted to leave office without burning everything down first. This seat is considered crucial for Democrats trying to hold ground while Republicans fight to keep their Senate majority.
Adam Green, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, described this race as "ground zero" in the battle between "status quo corporate Democrats" and "shake up the system economic fighters." Nothing says relatable populism like a prepared statement from a political action committee.
Meanwhile, Republicans are over in their corner doing a victory lap before the race even starts. The NRCC dropped a memo on July 26, marking 100 days until Election Day, bragging about a $13.7 million cash advantage over the DCCC. They claim this is their strongest financial position at this point in a cycle in twenty years. They are basically the kid who shows up to a pickup basketball game wearing brand new Jordans.
The electoral math looks pretty spicy too. Democrats are reportedly defending 23 House seats that Donald Trump won in 2024, while Republicans only need to protect eight districts that Kamala Harris carried. The NRCC has expanded its target list to 36 Democratic seats after adding seven more districts. Their memo boldly declared, "This is not a defensive battlefield," followed immediately by, "The next 100 days won't be easy." So which one is it, guys?
NRCC Spokesman Mike Marinella piled on, predicting that House Democrats will spend every remaining day trying to explain away what he called their "radical socialist record." Republicans, he added, have the momentum, candidates, resources, and the map to grow their majority. Confidence is a beautiful thing, especially 100 days before anyone actually votes.
