Kayleigh McEnany spent the scariest chapter of the pandemic practically living in the same rooms as Dr. Anthony Fauci. The Situation Room, the Oval Office, phone calls, you name it. She was defending the administration's school reopening efforts from behind the White House podium using the very same scientific arguments Fauci was publicly citing. Now, according to USA Journal, she has gotten her hands on his personal diaries, and let's just say she is not thrilled with what she found.
Back on July 9, 2020, McEnany laid out the argument for getting kids back in classrooms using data from basically every major health authority in America. The CDC director said kids were minimally impacted by COVID. McKinsey released warnings that closures would disproportionately devastate students of color. HHS pointed out that schools accounted for one fifth of all child abuse reports, meaning shuttered classrooms meant unreported abuse. The American Academy of Pediatrics even flagged potential child mortality resulting from extended closures.
And here comes the juicy part. Fauci's own diary entries from May 2020 acknowledged that America could see more excess deaths from measles, because children were missing routine vaccinations, than from COVID itself. So he clearly understood the tradeoffs. But then, just two months later, the same guy was privately scribbling that Trump "does not care about the safety of the children" for pushing to reopen schools. Same science, completely opposite private take. It is almost like watching someone argue with themselves and somehow lose both sides.
McEnany went on television and called this situation "indeed a crime," saying that Americans still lack the answers they are owed. She pointed out that she personally defended positions she believed were backed by the guy she was working alongside, only to discover he was writing contradictory thoughts in his personal journal the entire time. That has got to sting.
The fallout from pandemic era decisions is well documented and irreversible at this point. Children lost critical years of academic and social growth. Countless small businesses vanished forever. A mental health crisis among adolescents exploded in ways experts had actually predicted but that got ignored because, apparently, an internal political grudge match was more compelling.
And when Congress finally tried getting some clarity? Fauci invoked his Fifth Amendment rights 111 separate times under oath. One hundred and eleven! That is not pleading the Fifth so much as filibustering with silence. His wife reportedly flipped off a photographer following the contempt vote, which is certainly one way to handle public accountability. Meanwhile, his attorney continues dismissing congressional oversight as nothing more than a "political stunt."
The contempt referral now sits with the Department of Justice. The investigation is ongoing. The diary itself runs a staggering 1,000 pages. McEnany says the American people deserve answers, and honestly, after six years of waiting, that feels like a fairly modest request. Whether those answers actually materialize depends entirely on how long Fauci can keep playing hide and seek with Congress.
