Former FBI special agent Mike Rogers just clinched the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in Michigan, and honestly, it was the least dramatic victory since your uncle won solitaire against himself. Rogers ran completely unopposed in the GOP primary, which is basically like showing up to a foot race where every other runner called in sick. Congratulations, champ. As reported by The American Tribune, this uncontested coronation sets up what could be one of the spiciest Senate races come November.
The seat opened up because Democratic Sen. Gary Peters decided not to pursue a third term, giving Republicans a golden opportunity to pad their Senate majority. This is actually Rogers' second crack at this particular nut. Back in 2024, he lost to Democrat Elissa Slotkin by roughly 19,000 votes, a margin so razor thin it was basically a rounding error, about a third of one percentage point. And that happened while Trump was busy winning the entire state of Michigan at the presidential level. So naturally, national Republicans looked around and said, "Yeah, this is probably still our strongest guy."
Rogers sat down with Breitbart News back in May and delivered what might be the most 2026 political sentence ever uttered. He warned that Democrats want to do to Michigan what New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has done to the Big Apple. He also claimed certain candidates are "very interested in owning grocery stores and owning every bit of your health care." Then he coined what I can only assume he hopes becomes a bumper sticker: "They want to Mamdani Michigan." Say that five times fast.
For context, Mamdani belongs to the Democratic Socialists of America, which recently updated their party platform to include dismantling the Supreme Court and eliminating the office of president entirely. Three additional DSA members also knocked off incumbent Democrats in New York City primaries. So, you know, just light stuff.
Rogers is no political newcomer. He served in the U.S. House from 2001 to 2015 and chaired the House Intelligence Committee. He predicted the next 90 days will be a "sprint" with boatloads of national attention and absurd amounts of campaign cash. His exact quote was "eight gazillion dollars flowing into this state," which is technically not a real number but somehow feels accurate.
Michigan GOP Chairman Pete Hoekstra chimed in, saying the primary wrapping up effectively resets everything for the general election. He promised to help both Rogers and Donald Trump get their messages out, noting that a Trump victory in Michigan would naturally boost the Senate candidate as well.
So there you have it. One guy ran for Senate against nobody, won spectacularly, and now prepares for what promises to be a very expensive, very loud, very Michigan kind of political brawl. Buckle up, Wolverine State.
