So congratulations, Democrats. You officially crossed the rubicon, and apparently nobody packed a life jacket.
NBC's Steve Kornacki reportedly discussed this on the air with what could only be described as visible discomfort, and honestly, who can blame the guy? Because once you step outside the Democratic tent, the landscape looks completely different. Among independent voters, a whopping 77 percent have an unfavorable opinion of socialism, with just 17 percent giving it a thumbs up. So basically, the only place socialism polls well is inside the party that keeps insisting it's totally not socialist.
But wait, it gets even spicier. A Gallup survey that CNN cited, apparently in an effort to make this whole thing seem like no big deal, actually showed 66 percent of Democrats viewing socialism positively. CNN reportedly tried framing that as only a modest improvement. Sixty six percent is modest now? That's like saying a house fire is just a modest increase in temperature.
This isn't some fringe movement barking from the sidelines anymore. The article points out that figures like Zohran Mamdani, AOC, and Abdul El-Sayed have been championing ideas like government run supermarkets, abolishing private property, seizing the means of production, defunding police, and prison abolition for years. The DSA agenda, once dismissed as a college campus fever dream, now apparently has majority backing among one of the country's two main political parties. Oh, and Mamdani is currently serving as mayor of New York City, while AOC is being discussed as a 2028 presidential frontrunner. So that fringe movement got itself a pretty nice corner office.
President Trump weighed in this month, calling the situation a holy war on communism. He wrote that Americans are made in the image of one almighty God, and that a communist would never acknowledge that. Whether you find that inspiring or dramatic, the polling data certainly backs up his claim that the stakes are real.
Conservatives have been sounding alarms about this trajectory for years and were repeatedly told they were overreacting. That democratic socialism was just a harmless label. That Bernie Sanders simply wanted expanded healthcare and affordable college, not anything extreme. That the DSA had zero real political clout. Well, those predictions aged about as well as milk in July.
The broader American electorate still opposes socialism by roughly a three to one margin. The midterm elections will reveal whether that majority is actually paying attention, or just scrolling past the warning signs on their way to the next cat video.
