In a devastating and terrifying incident during a regional soccer tournament in southern Thailand, a bolt of lightning struck the pitch on Tuesday evening, killing one player and injuring nine others. This is one of those stories where sarcasm takes a back seat because nature decided to remind everyone just how powerless we really are.
As first reported, the tragedy unfolded at Santiphap Stadium in the Su-ngai Kolok municipality of Narathiwat province, right near the Malaysian border. The match was a semifinal of the Golok FA Cup 2026, featuring a team called SAMCOLTS, composed of both Thai and Malaysian players, going up against Abu x Nong Sirin.
According to local police chief Colonel Thun Sirikhunt, the lightning bolt came down somewhere between 5:00 and 5:30 p.m. local time. Video footage that circulated online captured a blinding flash of light slamming into an area of the field, followed by a thunderous boom, after which multiple players crumpled to the ground.
The player who lost his life was Sofwan Awae, a 24 year old Thai winger who had just signed with Yala FC, a club in Thai League 3, on July 29. Before joining Yala, he had been with Pattani FC, where he put up an impressive seven goals across 18 matches and helped the club earn promotion to Thai League 2 for the 2025 to 2026 season. He was a young man with a bright career ahead of him, and this loss is genuinely heartbreaking.
Teammates were seen on the field desperately trying to revive Awae, turning him onto his back before emergency medical responders could arrive. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition but ultimately did not survive.
Nine other players sustained injuries from the strike. Among them was 22 year old Malaysian player Mohamad Alif Ezzahan Zulkifli from Kelantan, who was on the SAMCOLTS roster. He suffered a leg injury, got treated at Sungai Kolok Hospital, and was eventually cleared to head back to Malaysia. The remaining injured players, mostly Thai, were also treated at the same hospital for what doctors described primarily as burn related injuries.
The Football Association of Thailand released a statement expressing their grief, saying the organization joins in mourning and extends condolences to Awae's family, those involved, and his football club during this painful time.
There is genuinely nothing funny about a young athlete losing his life to something so random and uncontrollable. Sometimes the world just throws something at you that no amount of talent, preparation, or athleticism can defend against. Rest in peace, Sofwan Awae.
