National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett went on CNN's State of the Union this past Sunday and dropped a stat so jaw-dropping it left the panel speechless. According to USA Journal, a staggering 83,000 construction workers are currently on job sites across America putting up brand new factories. That figure has literally never been recorded before in this country's history. Not ever.
But wait, it gets juicier. Hassett also revealed that initial unemployment insurance claims have plunged to levels not witnessed since World War II. And here is the cherry on top of this economic sundae: there are currently MORE open positions than there are people without work to fill them. Read that again. The country literally cannot find enough humans to staff all the available gigs.
Remember when every talking head on cable news swore up and down that tariffs would wreck the economy? Inflation actually fell 0.4% in June, marking the largest single month decline in over six years. Whoops.
Hassett also threw some serious shade at the previous administration's track record. He pointed out that the average construction or manufacturing worker pocketed an additional $3,000 to $4,000 in salary under Trump. Under Biden? That same worker watched their paycheck shrink by roughly $3,000 as manufacturing cratered and 230,000 blue collar positions evaporated into thin air.
The investment numbers flooding into the country are absolutely bonkers. Toyota locked in $3.6 billion for Texas operations. TSMC committed a mind-blowing $265 billion to Arizona. On top of all that, 3.5 million brand new businesses launched during the first six months of 2026 alone.
Now, some folks tried to poke holes in July's jobs report. Hassett addressed that head on, explaining the noise came from FIFA World Cup temporary workers filing claims after the tournament wrapped up, plus teachers in certain states going on summer break. Once you strip out those one time factors, job creation landed right around the 100,000 consensus estimate. The underlying trend remains rock solid.
For years, the political class told American workers that factory jobs were gone forever. They said globalization made it inevitable. They practically told the entire manufacturing sector to pack it up and learn to code.
Instead, cranes are going up from coast to coast. Wages are climbing. Unemployment claims are scraping historic lows. Companies from around the globe are racing to build on American soil.
The critics spent months writing the obituary for this economy. Turns out the economy never got the memo. It was too busy hiring people and pouring concrete.
