Well folks, the rock and roll beef of the summer is here, and it involves two guys whose combined age could qualify for a historical landmark designation. Journey's guitarist and keyboard player Jonathan Cain has gone full Send on Bruce Springsteen, calling him an "annoying, bitter old man" who needs to zip it when it comes to political commentary, as The American Tribune reported.
Cain dropped these verbal grenades while chatting on the Tom Bernard Podcast, where he also busted out some truly spectacular wordplay by telling The Boss, "You were 'Born in the USA' weren't you? So act like it." That's the kind of burn that takes a full eight count to recover from.
The Journey rocker also made sure everyone knew exactly where he stands on the political spectrum, explaining that he used to be a Democrat but jumped ship somewhere around the Obama era. "I saw where he was going and I'm like, okay, we can't have this anymore," Cain said, officially stamping himself as a "diehard conservative." He also lumped Robert De Niro in with Springsteen as celebrities who need to pipe down and just focus on their craft. "Who cares, guys? Really? Do your art," he pleaded.
Now here's the beautiful irony that makes this whole thing chef's kiss levels of entertaining. Cain says musicians should keep politics far away from their music. He literally said, "I try to keep politics out of my music." And then, in the very next breath, he announced that he just dropped a patriotic anthem called "The Winds of Freedom: A Salute to America" for the nation's 250th birthday. Because nothing says "keeping politics out of my music" quite like releasing a salute to America while publicly roasting fellow musicians for being political.
Cain insisted that performers have a responsibility to bring audiences together rather than driving wedges between them. He pointed out that Journey concerts feature both Republicans and Democrats in the crowd, all united in belting out "Don't Stop Believin." Which, honestly, is a fair point. Nobody has ever gotten into a fistfight during that song's piano intro.
He also threw in a little bonus dig at Springsteen's most famous track, noting that if you actually read the lyrics to "Born in the USA," the song is basically a criticism of the country. Which has been common knowledge since approximately 1984, but sure, go off king.
On a somber note, Cain also released a tribute song called "No One Else" following the tragic assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, the Turning Point USA founder.
Meanwhile, Springsteen has spent much of 2026 ripping into ICE from concert stages and called himself a "patriot" earlier this year for criticizing President Trump. So basically, both of these guys think they're the real patriots, and the other one is doing patriotism wrong. Classic rock, classic America.
Journey kicks off their "Final Frontier" farewell tour of North America this September, which means Cain will have plenty of stages from which to definitely, absolutely, 100 percent not talk about politics.
