Vice President JD Vance is now officially outnumbered by his own children, which is more than most politicians can say about their constituents. Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance welcomed their fourth child on Sunday, a son named Alec Neel Vance, as Trending Politics reported.
The couple posted a joint statement on social media announcing the arrival. "We are excited to announce that our baby boy, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning. Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother," the statement read. They also thanked the military doctors and staff at Walter Reed Medical Center and the White House Medical Unit, calling them "a blessing."
Here is the fun historical nugget: Alec Neel Vance is the first child born to a sitting U.S. vice president in more than 150 years. That means the last time this happened, people were still arguing about Reconstruction instead of arguing on Twitter. Progress.
The Vances already had a full roster with Ewan (9), Vivek (6), and Mirabel (4). So now they have a starting lineup and a sub. The older siblings were reportedly overjoyed to meet their new brother, which is the kind of enthusiasm that typically lasts about 72 hours before someone starts fighting over who gets to hold the remote.
The couple first announced the pregnancy back in January, saying Usha was expecting a boy due in late July. Right on schedule, which is more than you can say for most government operations.
Usha Vance had previously discussed the decision to have a fourth child in a March interview with NBC News, explaining her thought process with remarkable honesty. "People have asked me if we're going to have a fourth baby, and I've never closed the door on that," she said, adding that she grew up in a family of two and thought that was a great number before having her own kids and feeling like she was not quite done. "We did feel very complete with a third child, in many ways," she continued. "But as time passed, I realized that I was feeling more and more excited about that possibility. And so if there was a chance, I should take it. I knew that I'd be happy if we only had three kids, and I knew that I'd be happy if we had four. And so here we are."
That is honestly a more thoughtful decision matrix than most people apply to choosing a restaurant on a Friday night.
JD and Usha Vance met at Yale Law School, because of course they did, and married on June 14, 2014, in Kentucky in an interfaith ceremony. They have now been married for more than 12 years, which in Washington D.C. years is roughly equivalent to a golden anniversary.
Congratulations to the Vance family. Four kids under ten in the Naval Observatory. That house is about to get loud.
