Specifically, Jordan wanted to know if Smith or his team had peeked at private text messages belonging to members of Congress.
Smith's answer? A clean, crisp "No." He insisted his crew only went after telephone toll records, which are basically just call logs showing numbers, times, and durations. No content, no peeking, nothing juicy. Just boring metadata. Sounds innocent enough, right?
Except Senator Chuck Grassley from Iowa then released records showing that Smith's investigators had actually read text messages involving 44 current and former lawmakers from both parties, plus White House officials. Those communications covered the period from October 2020 through January 20th, 2021. So that confident "No" suddenly looks a whole lot less convincing.
