Hunter Biden, a man whose self-awareness could fit inside a thimble with room left over for a studio apartment, went on Jennifer Welch's podcast Monday to declare that Merrick Garland was his father's greatest mistake as president. His reasoning, as USA Journal reported, is that Garland didn't move fast enough to prosecute Donald Trump after January 6th.
Let that one settle in for a moment. The guy who received arguably the most expansive presidential pardon in modern American history, covering years of conduct, for crimes not yet charged, from investigations not yet concluded, is now going on podcasts to complain that the Justice Department wasn't aggressive enough against his father's political opponent. You really cannot make this stuff up.
Hunter's take, delivered with all the self-reflection of a man who has never once had to sit with consequences for longer than a news cycle, is that Garland was too cautious. Too slow. Too deferential. That the DOJ's alleged timidity is what doomed Joe Biden's legacy and handed Trump a second term.
What Hunter conspicuously avoids mentioning is the possibility that maybe Jack Smith's cases didn't collapse because Garland was timid. Maybe they collapsed because the legal theories underpinning them couldn't survive scrutiny. That's a less dramatic narrative, sure, but it has the unfortunate quality of being plausible.
Meanwhile, Joe Biden himself expressed regret about picking Garland, but for the opposite reason. According to Bob Woodward's book "War," Biden told an associate he "should never have picked Garland" because Garland's appointment of a special counsel led directly to Hunter's federal prosecution. Biden also reportedly said about his son's legal troubles, "this is never going to f***ing go away."
So father and son are now publicly blaming the same man for opposite failures. Garland was simultaneously too aggressive (for prosecuting Hunter) and not aggressive enough (for not nailing Trump fast enough). Schrodinger's Attorney General, if you will.
The irony gets even thicker when you look at what Garland actually did during his tenure. The FBI went after parents at school board meetings. Traditional Catholics were flagged as potential domestic extremists. Pro-life advocates got hit with FACE Act prosecutions while attacks on pregnancy centers went largely unaddressed. The Hunter Biden investigation was slow-walked for years before David Weiss was appointed special counsel only after a plea deal fell apart. This was not exactly a man known for restraint. He was selective in his activism, and he still wasn't radical enough for the Bidens.
The whole thing is a masterclass in a complete lack of awareness. You get a blanket pardon from your dad. You walk away from federal charges. Then you hop on a podcast and complain that the Justice Department should have been more weaponized against your family's political rival. It would be genuinely shocking coming from anyone else, but from Hunter Biden it's just another Monday.
