Hayden Panettiere has died at the age of 36.

The actress, celebrated for iconic television roles on "Heroes" and "Nashville," passed away on Sunday in South Carolina, as reported by her representative and confirmed through a family statement. She was just days away from turning 37 on Friday. No official cause of death has been released, and authorities say the investigation is still ongoing.

According to the Associated Press, Panettiere was discovered unresponsive at a South Carolina apartment complex. First responders performed life-saving efforts at the scene but were unable to revive her. Officials noted there were no indicators of foul play or anything suspicious. An autopsy has not yet been completed.

Her father, Skip Panettiere, released a statement on behalf of the family calling his daughter "an incredible light and a force of nature" who filled the lives of everyone around her with love and happiness. The family requested privacy as they navigate this devastating loss. She is survived by her parents and her daughter, Kaya.

Panettiere's career in entertainment started before she could even walk. She appeared in commercials as an infant and transitioned to soap operas like "One Life to Live" and "Guiding Light" while still a small child. By the age of nine, she had lent her voice to the character Dot in Pixar's "A Bug's Life." Two years later, she charmed audiences as the football-obsessed Sheryl Yoast in "Remember the Titans."

Her massive television breakthrough arrived in 2006 when she landed the role of Claire Bennet, the indestructible cheerleader on NBC's "Heroes." The show's now legendary catchphrase, "Save the cheerleader, save the world," became a cultural phenomenon, and she was at the center of it all.

Then came another career-defining gig in 2012. She stepped into the stilettos of Juliette Barnes, the fiery and complicated country music star on "Nashville." Panettiere actually sang her own tracks for the musical series, which aired for six seasons through 2018. Several of those recordings even landed on Billboard's country chart. The performance earned her two Golden Globe nods for best supporting actress.

On the big screen, her credits ranged from "Raising Helen" and "Ice Princess" to "Scream 4" and "Scream VI," where she returned as the beloved character Kirby Reed. More recently, she starred in "Amber Alert" and the 2026 thriller "Sleepwalker." She also contributed voice performances to the "Kingdom Hearts" video game franchise and played Samantha Giddings in "Until Dawn."

Beyond Hollywood, Panettiere was remarkably candid about her personal battles with postpartum depression, alcoholism, and addiction. She laid it all bare in her memoir, "This Is Me: A Reckoning," published just this past May.

Her daughter Kaya was born in 2014 during her relationship with heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko. Tragically, Panettiere had already endured the sudden loss of her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, who died in February 2023 at just 28 from complications related to an enlarged heart and an aortic valve condition. Hayden later shared that losing her brother left her permanently heartbroken.

Now the world mourns alongside her family.
